50 Cool And Unique Ferret Names You Should Use Now

Picking a name for your ferret can be confusing and difficult – what are you supposed to call a ferret anyway? There are tons of resources on dog and cat names, because nearly everyone has dogs and cats, but ferret names are hard to come by. Thankfully, in this post I’ll break down the best ways to choose a ferret name. As a bonus, I’ll provide you with a list of 50 popular and unique ferret names. The list includes names that ferret owners and ferret shelter caretakers love, and a few original names that I came up with using the tips I’ll share in this article. Check out my other article if you want to find out how to get a ferret.

It’s always interesting to find out what people name their pets. People can get really creative with their pet names. For example, having a brown cat and naming it 11:30, because it’s not dark enough for midnight. Some people might name their pets with complete inside jokes; so a stranger might have no idea why it’s named a certain way.

The reason you can get so creative with pet names is because pets don’t have the same filter as humans do. You have to be much more thoughtful in naming your child, but not so thoughtful with pets. For instance, you could name your pet ferret “chocolate” and there wouldn’t be a problem. But name your daughter “chocolate” and that could cause problems.

Guidelines for picking the best ferret name

Here are a few short and simple guidelines you should follow when choosing a name for your ferret.

Keep it simple

Giving your pet a simple and short name is important because animals respond much better to short words. They’re also easier to call out. Keeping the name at one or two syllables is an ideal length.

Use the ferret’s appearance

If you’re stumped and can’t find a name for your ferret, you might find inspiration in the pet’s appearance. On this article you can read about the different colors and breeds of ferrets. Something interesting you’ll notice is that you can make very creative and appealing names from the types of ferrets. For example if you have a Chocolate ferret, you can name him something creative related to chocolate, such as nibbler or fudge. You can even name him chocolate! And that brings me to the next tip.

Use food and drinks

Many people love naming their pets after food, and we can see why – it’s cute and easy to say, and animals love food. Like we already mentioned, this works perfectly for ferrets, because many types of ferrets are already named after food, like the Chocolate ferret, the Cinnamon ferret, and the Champagne ferret. You can also get creative with other food and drinks, and make it match with the ferret’s appearance. For example if you have a Chocolate ferret, you might call him snickers.

Consider how it will sound out loud

This is something that many pet owners don’t think about when first choosing a name but here’s why it’s important – often you’ll need to call out to your ferret in public. So you have to pick a name that wouldn’t be embarrassing to say. Also, if the name sounds very similar to a common command you use for the ferret, that would be confusing for him. For example, if you have a Cinnamon ferret, and you name him cumin, because you wanted to name him after a spice, that sounds very similar to commands such as “come” or “come in” which ferret owners often use. So you should pick a name that sounds different from other common words.

Take the ferret’s personality and age into consideration

Naming your ferret based on their personality can work really well. If your ferret has a sweet and kind personality, you might name him Sweety. It’s also important for the name to not be sensitive to the ferret’s age. For example, if you have a baby ferret and you name him Kit (kit is a term for baby ferrets), the name might not work so well when the ferret is older.
